After watching the Netflix show The Witcher, the strong character of Ciri became irresistible, and we had to include her in the Shades of Magick series.

Princess Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon has elder blood, which means she’s descendant of an elf who mated with a human. Long ago, an elven sorceress fell in love with a human mage and their daughter, Riannon, was born with powerful magical abilities. Riannon was Ciri’s distant ancestor; hence Ciri’s elder blood, which is only passed down through the female line.

Ciri’s elder blood gives her the ability to jump worlds, which is why she’s hunted by many in the Witcher realm. Notably, the Elven King of the Wild Hunt wants to use Ciri to open a portal from his world - Aen Elle - so he can conquer hers.

As one might imagine, this is overwhelming for a young girl raised as a sheltered princess of Cintra. I chose the moment she and her guardian father Geralt are sitting by the fire at night, enjoying a brief respite from perilous adventures. The weight of all she’s learned and still must learn is showing in her face, which reflects anxiety and wonder. She knows she has great power, coupled with no idea of how to control it yet.

I’ve included some elements which were not in the series because of the visual symbolism. The wild Hare is an archetypal symbol of women, female deities, and women’s hedgerow magic. In some lands, Hare is the messenger of the Goddess, moving by moonlight between the human world and the realm of the gods. It’s a visual representation of Ciri’s magical ability to move between worlds.

I chose the crescent moon since it’s viewed as feminine in the waning cycle. In summation, the Hare is associated with the divine feminine, goddess of wild places, the wild hunt, and the moon in mythologies from all over the world.
